In occasione delle loro date in Italia, precisamente il 14 novembre al Covo Club di Bologna ed il 15 novembre all’Arci Bellezza di Milano, noi di Rockoon abbiamo avuto modo di intervistare i Cari Cari. Il duo austriaco ha da poco pubblicato il suo terzo album in studio, “One More Trip Around The Sound”, e ci ha raccontato qualcosa in più su come siano nate le tracce che fanno parte del disco. Inoltre ci ha svelato cosa si aspetta dai concerti in Italia e qual è stata la reazione del pubblico fino ad ora alle nuove canzoni.

Ciao e benvenuti su Rockoon. Per prima cosa come state?

Stiamo alla grande, grazie. Non vediamo l’ora di tornare in Italia.

Partiamo dall’inizio. Per chi non lo sa, come vi siete conosciuti ed avete iniziato a fare musica insieme?

Alex: Ci siamo conosciuti grazie alla musica. Io facevo parte di un altro gruppo e ho scoperto la musica di Steph su YouTube. Credo che stesse lavorando a un progetto come cantautrice. Le ho chiesto se voleva fare da gruppo spalla al mio gruppo. Avevamo circa 18 o 17 anni, quindi non era un granché. Abbiamo subito legato e abbiamo iniziato a fare musica insieme, e da allora non ci siamo più guardati indietro.

Voi siete austriaci, com’è la scena musicale indie rock nel vostro paese?

Penso che ne rimarrai sorpresa. Credo che sia una delle migliori in Europa, senza dubbio. Ci sono band fantastiche. Ovviamente abbiamo artisti come Kruder & Dorfmeister, HVOB, Bilderbuch e WANDA, che sono artisti di lingua tedesca. Ci sono molte cose in ballo e molto da scoprire. Basta cercare su Spotify le band che suonano come noi. Penso che troverai cose che ti piaceranno. In realtà non conosco molto la scena musicale italiana, quindi se hai qualche idea o suggerimento, te ne sarei molto grato.

Come mai la scelta di cantare in inglese? Pensate sia più universale?

Non lo so. Credo che siamo semplicemente cresciuti ascoltando musica internazionale, soprattutto americana e britannica, e ci è sembrato naturale farlo con il nostro sound e con quello che vogliamo fare.

Quest’anno avete pubblicato il vostro terzo album “One More Trip Around The Sun”. Vi andrebbe di raccontarci com’è nato?

Sai, non abbiamo mai imparato a suonare uno strumento né studiato musica, quindi tutto ciò che facciamo è molto caotico e non segue una formula prestabilita. Iniziamo semplicemente a fare le cose e passiamo un anno a improvvisare, scrivere canzoni e lavorarci sopra. Mi piace pensare a noi come a degli scultori, che lavorano fino a trovare qualcosa di interessante. Durante il processo di realizzazione dell’album, a un certo punto diventa semplicemente un album. Ci siamo resi conto che alcuni temi ricorrevano nei testi, apparentemente dal nostro subconscio. Questo disco parla del tempo, della famiglia, del guardare indietro, della riflessione e del nostro posto nel mondo. È così che è nato. Siamo molto orgogliosi di questo disco. Penso che sia il miglior disco che abbiamo mai realizzato. Non vediamo l’ora di suonarlo dal vivo in Italia!

Come avete scelto i singoli?

Penso che con i singoli sia sempre stato naturale. La cosa bella di noi è che le nostre canzoni sono tutte molto diverse tra loro. Alcune canzoni sembrano dei singoli: vanno bene alla radio e attirano l’attenzione della gente. Poi ci sono le preferite dai fan, canzoni che non sono mai state pubblicate come singoli, ma che vengono richieste spesso durante i concerti e che la gente ama. Ne sono un esempio “Bad News” dal nuovo album, ‘Mazuka’ dal primo album o “After the Gold Rush” da Anaana. Quindi, non saprei, non è mai stata una grande discussione. Per noi è sempre stato ovvio quali canzoni sarebbero state dei singoli e quali avrebbero funzionato meglio dal vivo.

Come pensate si sia evoluto il vostro sound dal primo all’ultimo disco?

Il primo album è stato un periodo in cui scrivevamo canzoni attivamente. Stavamo solo cercando il nostro sound. Non sapevamo cosa stessimo facendo, stavamo solo vedendo cosa sarebbe successo. Alla fine, tutto ha preso forma. In questo disco, penso che abbiamo davvero cercato di mostrare tutta la gamma di ciò che siamo in grado di fare. Sai, possiamo fare cose molto tranquille, solo strumenti acustici, chitarra acustica, armonie, voci, ma possiamo anche fare cose molto epiche, rock pesante, quasi stoner rock, e tutto ciò che sta in mezzo. In questo disco, penso che abbiamo cercato di mostrare l’intero spettro, tutta la tavolozza di colori che abbiamo a disposizione, e penso che ci siamo riusciti e ne andiamo molto fieri.

Attualmente siete in tour e a breve presenterete le nuove canzoni anche al pubblico italiano per due concerti. Cosa vi aspettate da queste date in Italia?

Siamo stati in tour per quasi tutto l’anno. Credo che abbiamo fatto circa 100 concerti. Abbiamo trascorso tre settimane negli Stati Uniti e due o tre mesi in Europa, suonando in molti festival. Abbiamo viaggiato ovunque, da Los Angeles alla Turchia e da Oslo a Barcellona. Questi sono i nostri ultimi concerti dell’anno. Non vediamo l’ora! Saranno alcuni dei concerti più piccoli dell’anno. È stato lo stesso quando siamo andati in Italia l’ultima volta. Ma sono stati alcuni dei nostri concerti preferiti dell’anno. Il pubblico e l’energia erano incredibili. Abbiamo amato ogni secondo. Quindi non vediamo l’ora di tornare. E, naturalmente, il cibo italiano e la gente sono sempre un buon motivo per tornare.

Fino ad ora com’è stata la reazione del pubblico alle nuove canzoni?

Ottimo. Credo che molte persone, così come la stampa, abbiano affermato che questo sia il miglior album che abbiamo mai realizzato. Sai, in termini di raccolta e concept. Sono d’accordo. Questo disco ci ha dato una grande spinta. Abbiamo tenuto i concerti più importanti della nostra carriera, intrapreso il tour più intenso e incontrato tantissime persone nuove. Siamo cresciuti come band e come musicisti. È stato un anno fantastico.

Ultima domanda. Vi andrebbe di lasciare un messaggio ai nostri lettori per convincerli ad ascoltare la vostra musica?

Sì. Penso che sia sempre più difficile scoprire cose che non siano al 100% mainstream, che non sembrino generate dall’intelligenza artificiale, e noi cerchiamo di perseguire qualcosa di autentico e umano, con tutti i suoi difetti. E penso che, soprattutto se verrete a un concerto, sarà divertente e trascorrerete un bel momento.

Hi and welcome to Rockoon. First of all, how are you?

We are great. Thank you so much. Looking forward to being back in Italy.

Let’s start from the very beginning. For the ones who don’t know, how have you met each other and started doing music together?

We actually met through music. I, Alex, was in another band and I discovered Steph’s music on YouTube. I think she was doing a singer-songwriter project. And I asked her if she wanted to be the support band for my band. I think we were like 18 or 17 years old, so it wasn’t very good. And we immediately clicked and started making music together, and never looked back ever since.

You’re from Austria. How is the indie rock scene in your country?

I think you would be surprised. I think it’s one of the best in Europe, definitely. There are amazing bands. Of course, we’ve got acts like Kruder & Dorfmeister, we’ve got HVOB, Bilderbuch, and WANDA, who are German-speaking acts. There’s a lot going on, and a lot to discover. Just check out bands that sound like us on Spotify. I think you’re gonna find things that you’re gonna dig. I actually don’t know a lot about the Italian music scene, so if you have some ideas and shares, it’s very appreciated.

Why did you choose to sing in english? Do you think it’s more international?

I don’t know. I think we just grew up listening to international music, especially American music and music from the UK, and it just felt like the natural thing to do with our sound and what we want to do.

You released your third album, “One More Trip Around The Sun”, this year. Would you like to talk about how it was born?

You know, we never learnt to play an instrument or studied music, so everything we do is very chaotic and doesn’t follow a set formula. We just start doing things and spend a year jamming, writing songs and chipping away at it. I like to think of ourselves as sculptors, working until we find something interesting. Throughout the process of making the album, it just becomes an album at some point. We realised that certain themes reoccurred in the lyrics, seemingly from our subconscious. This record is about time, family, looking back, reflection and our place in the world. This is how it all came together. We’re very proud of the record. I think it’s the best record we’ve ever made. We can’t wait to play it live in Italy!

How did you choose the singles?

I think with singles, it always felt natural. The cool thing about us is that our songs are all very different. Some songs feel like singles; they do well on the radio and draw people in. Then there are fan favourites – songs that have never been released as singles, but which are heavily requested at live shows and which people love. Examples would be ‘Bad News’ from the new record, ‘Mazuka’ from the first record, or ‘After the Gold Rush’ from Anaana. So, I don’t know; it’s never been a big discussion. It was always obvious to us which songs would be singles and which would work better live.

How do you think your sound has evolved from the first to the last album?

The first album was a period during which we were actively writing songs. We were just finding our sound. We didn’t know what we were doing; we were just seeing what would happen. In the end, it came together. On this record, I think we’ve really tried to show the full range of what we can do. You know, we can do like very quiet, just acoustic instruments, acoustic guitar, harmony, vocals, but we can also do like a very epic, full-on, heavy rock, almost like stoner rock thing, and everything in between. And on this record, I think we tried to show the whole spectrum, like the whole palette of colours we’ve got. And I think we succeeded. I’m very pleased.

You’re on tour at the moment and soon you’ll also be in Italy for two concerts. What do you expect from them?

We’ve been on tour for almost the whole year. I think we played around 100 shows. We spent three weeks in the US and two or three months in Europe, playing at lots of festivals. We travelled everywhere, from Los Angeles to Turkey and from Oslo to Barcelona. These are our last few shows of the year. We can’t wait! They’re going to be some of the smallest shows of the year. It was the same when we went to Italy last time though. But they were some of our favourite shows of the year. The crowd and the energy were incredible. We loved every second of it. So we can’t wait to go back. And, of course, the Italian food and people are always a good reason to come back.

How has the public reaction been to your new songs so far?

Very good. I think a lot of people, as well as the press, said that this is the best album we’ve ever done. You know, in terms of the collection and the concept. I agree. This record has given us such a big push again. We played the biggest shows of our career, undertook the most intense tour and met so many new people. We’ve grown as a band and as musicians. It was a great year.

Last question. Would you like to leave a message to our readers to convince them to listen to your music?

Yeah. I think it gets harder and harder to discover things that don’t go 100% in the mainstream, you know, that don’t feel like they’re AI generated, and we try to pursue something authentic and something human, with all its flaws. And I think, especially if you go to a concert, I think it’s going to be fun and you’re going to have a great time.
