Qualcuno ha avuto la fortuna di vederlo suonare in apertura all’ultima tappa del The Grand Union Tour dei The Struts e Barns Courtney lo scorso novembre al Fabrique di Milano. James Bruner, nel corso della nostra intervista, ci ha raccontato qualcosa in più riguardo a quest’esperienza e di come sia riuscito a realizzare il sogno di poter suonare insieme ad artisti che lo hanno profondamente influenzato. Non è mancata qualche anticipazione sui suoi prossimi lavori e qualche confessione più personale, in particolare noi di Rockoon gli abbiamo chiesto di fare delle scelte molto difficili… Leggete l’intervista completa per scoprire le sue risposte!

Ciao James, benvenuto su Rockoon! Prima di tutto come stai?

Ed eccoci qui! Io sto alla grande, tu come stai?

Io un po’ piena di cose da fare ma bene! Grazie mille per essere qui con noi!

Grazie a voi per avermi invitato.

Allora parlaci un po’ di te, com’è nata la tua passione per la musica e quando hai iniziato il tuo progetto musicale?

Allora sono James Bruner…

Lo sappiamo chi sei!

Scrivo canzoni da quando avevo circa 18 anni. Il mio amore per la musica è nato quando guardavo i video di skate. Mi piace molto lo skateboard. Guardavo quei video di skate, suonavano David Bowie o i Black Sabbath e pensavo che fosse la cosa più figa del mondo. Così, sai, ho seguito il mio amore per questo. Ho continuato a guardare video di skate, ho preso in mano una chitarra e ho iniziato a suonare e scrivere canzoni quando avevo 18 anni. Poco dopo mi sono trasferito a Nashville, nel Tennessee, per inseguire il sogno di scrivere canzoni e di esibirmi dal vivo, e ora, a distanza di qualche anno, riesco a fare tutte queste cose.

Quindi ci vai ancora sullo skate?

Assolutamente, ci vado ancora.

Ok, questa è un po’ bastarda. Se dovessi scegliere tra lo skate e la musica cosa sceglieresti?

Oh, non lo so! Questa è tipo la domanda a cui non vorrei mai dover rispondere! Ma alla fine credo la musica, perché il tuo corpo non può sopportare più di tanto gli abusi fisici dello skateboard. Ma poi, con il tempo, credo che la stessa cosa possa accadere anche con la musica, sai, le tue orecchie potrebbero stancarsi. Non lo so… Sì, probabilmente la musica.

Sceglierei la musica anche io.

Come definiresti il tuo genere musicale?

Direi che è una miscela di diversi rock, di diversi stili rock. In fondo, è musica rock, ma, sai, amo il rock alternativo. Amo l’hard rock. Amo l’indie rock. E quindi penso che sia una sorta di sana miscela di tutti questi stili. Adoro artisti come Jeff Buckley. Adoro gli artisti, ovviamente, come Barns & Morton. E, sai, amo artisti come i Rolling Stones e i Black Sabbath, ma sì, tutti questi artisti si sono mescolati insieme in questo miscuglio di rock.

Quindi sono loro gli artisti che ti hanno maggiormente influenzato o ce ne sono anche altri?

Sicuramente anche altri. Sai, più musica trovo e più mi ispiro. Ma, in definitiva, sono un fan di Barns da molto tempo. Mi piace molto la sua voce. Quello che mi ispira davvero, soprattutto dal punto di vista vocale, sono le voci che hanno molta grinta. Damiano David dei Måneskin è una grande fonte di ispirazione per me in questo momento.

Oh wow, orgoglio italiano! Sei recentemente andato in tour insieme a Barns Courtney e i The Struts, com’è stata per te quest’esperienza?

È stato un vortice di divertimento senza sosta. Voglio dire, mi piace andare in tournée, ma poterlo fare con Barns Courtney e The Struts è una cosa che ho potuto cancellare dalla mia lista di cose da fare. Ascolto gli Struts da quando ero al liceo. E poi anche Barns l’ho ascoltato per anni. E’ stato così surreale. E sto ancora elaborando il fatto che sia successo. Sai ogni tanto mi dico: “Oh sì, James, sei stato in tour con Brans Courtney e i The Strutts”. Posso morire felice, per non dire altro.

Beh penso che per un fan andare in tour con i propri artisti preferiti sia la cosa più bella. Com’è nata l’idea di andare in tour insieme a loro?

Sono andato in tour con Barns per il Supernatural Tour nell’autunno del 2023 e questo è avvenuto semplicemente perché ho avuto un sacco di fortuna e il mio fantastico manager mi ha aiutato a ottenere quel posto. Abbiamo mandato una mail e siamo riusciti a partecipare a quel tour ed è stato surreale. Anche il primo tour è stato lungo. Il primo tour con Barns è durato sei settimane ed è stato fantastico. Abbiamo mantenuto questo rapporto anche nel tour degli Struts con Barnes, il loro tour da co-headliner in Europa e nel Regno Unito.

Altra domanda difficile. Se dovessi scegliere tra Barns e i The Struts chi sceglieresti?

Se questo include anche l’esibizione dal vivo di entrambi, sai… Cercano di superarsi ogni sera per quanto sono incredibili… Non puoi scegliere… Dico Barns perché ultimamente sta indossando il mio merchandise. Ho notato che indossa i miei gadget e penso che sia una cosa davvero fantastica. Mi dispiace per i The Struts, vi amo ragazzi!

Oh si, fantastico davvero! Con loro hai suonato anche in Italia, a Milano, qualche mese fa. Com’è stata la risposta da parte del pubblico italiano?

È stato bellissimo. Credo che sia stato l’ultimo spettacolo del tour e che modo di concludere il tour fantastico! Sono uscito e ho iniziato con la mia canzone When I’m Down e ho pensato che fosse una cosa pazzesca. Voglio dire, tu eri lì, quindi probabilmente te lo ricordi. Ricordi che hanno iniziato a battere le mani per tenere il tempo su When I’m Down? Ed è una canzone in cui ci siamo solo io e la mia chitarra. Ricordo che ho smesso di suonare la chitarra e ho cantato con voi ragazzi ed è stata una delle esperienze più belle di sempre e sapete che ogni spettacolo in cui scendo dal palco e qualcuno mi tiene la mano quando mi alzo in piedi è sempre una vittoria. Milano è impazzita a dir poco e ho adorato incontrare tutti voi dopo.

C’è qualche altro artista con cui ti piacerebbe andare in tour o anche solo collaborare?

Lenny Kravitz sarebbe probabilmente la collaborazione dei miei sogni. Molte delle cose che sto facendo adesso sono ispirate al rock dei primi anni di Lenny Kravitz.

Parlando del processo creativo, come nascono le tue canzoni?

Può variare, sai. Mi è capitato che il testo venisse prima di tutto, ma credo che il modo migliore per farlo sia quello di sedermi con la mia chitarra acustica per ottenere un riff davvero forte, sai, un ritornello melodico davvero forte e organizzarlo sezione per sezione e poi pensare a cosa voglio scrivere? Cosa voglio che l’ascoltatore senta? Che cosa voglio? Metto la penna sulla carta e da lì nascono i testi e poi di solito faccio una demo, la metto nel computer e ci inserisco una chitarra elettrica per renderla un po’ più vivace e da lì la porto in studio e vedo che anima ha questa canzone.

I tuoi testi sono ispirati ad esperienze personali?

Decisamente! When I’m Down è stato l’ultimo singolo che ho pubblicato ed era estremamente personale. Parlava di una relazione finita male. E poi in questo disco, sai, ho scritto di cose ipotetiche che non hanno nulla a che fare con me. Ma penso che sia divertente, sai, creare personaggi e creare una sorta di universo in cui vivere. E poi, sai, non c’è cosa migliore che prendere la tua arte come un riflesso della tua vita.

Quali sono i tuoi progetti per il futuro? Stai lavorando a nuova musica?

Sono stato in studio, in realtà questa è la mia seconda settimana in studio, stiamo mixando, e oggi, strano a dirsi, è il nostro ultimo giorno di mixaggio di questo nuovo EP che uscirà quest’anno.

Ci sarà anche un nuovo tour?

Non posso né confermare né smentire ma mai dire mai.

Ultima domanda. C’è un messaggio che ti farebbe piacere lasciare ai nostri lettori?

Nuova musica in arrivo molto presto. Non posso né confermare né smentire che andrò in tour molto presto. Oddio, cosa posso dirgli? Nuova musica arriverà prima che possiate immaginare e ci vediamo in tour, siete fantastici!

Hello James, welcome to Rockoon! First of all, how are you?

Here we go! I’m doing great, how are you?

I’m a little bit busy but I’m fine, thanks. Thank you very much for being here!

So tell us a little bit about yourself and your music. How did your passion for music come out and when did you start your music project?

So I’m James Bruner…

We know who you are!

I’ve been writing songs since I was about, you know, 18 years old. And my love for music really came when I watched, you know, skate videos. I’m really into skateboarding. I would watch those skate videos and they’d be playing David Bowie, they’d be playing Black Sabbath. And I thought it was like the coolest thing ever. So, you know, I followed my love for that. I kept watching skate videos, got a guitar in my hand and started playing music and writing songs. I moved out to Nashville, Tennessee a little bit shortly after that and you know did pretty much just chase the dream of writing songs and performing live and you know fast forward a few years and I’m getting to do all those things.

So do you still skate?

Absolutely, yes I do!

This one is a little bit difficult. If you have to choose between music and skate, what would you choose?

Oh, I don’t know! This is the question I never wanna answer! I guess music because there’s only so much abuse your body can take, you know, physically from skateboarding. But then again, I feel like that could go the same way with music over time, you know, your ears could get exhausted. I don’t know. Yeah, probably music.

I would choose music too.

I know, sorry skateboarding!

How can you define your music?

I’d say it’s a blend of a bunch of different rock, you know, a bunch of different rock styles. At its core, it is rock music, but, you know, I love alternative rock. I love hard rock. I love indie rock. And so I think it’s kind of a healthy blend of all those together. You know, I love artists like, I like artists like Jeff Buckley, I love artists, obviously like Barns & Morton and I love artists like the Rolling Stones and Black Sabbath but yeah definitely all those kind of mashed together into this hodgepodge of rock. That’s it so.

So are these your musical influences or there are also others?

It’s definitely others, you know, the more music I’m finding, the more I get inspired. But, you know, ultimately, I’ve been a fan of Barns for a long time. I enjoy his voice a lot. What really inspires me, especially vocally, is like vocals that have a lot of grit to them. So like Damiano David from Måneskin is a huge inspiration for me right now.

Oh wow they’re italian! You’ve recently been on tour with Barns Courtney and The Struts. How would you describe this experience?

Man, it was a whirlwind of nonstop fun. I mean, I love touring, but being able to tour with Barnes, Courtney and The Struts, like that was, you know, something I could pretty much cross off my bucket list. I’ve listened to The Struts since I was in high school. I loved so much. And then Barns, I’ve listened to for years as well. But it was so surreal. And I’m still processing that it happened a lot of these days. A lot of these days, you know, like I’m still having to kind of bring myself back to earth and be like, oh yeah, James, you toured with Barns Courtney and The Struts. That’s a I can die a happy man, to say the least.

I think that for a fan it’s the best thing to go on tour with your favourite artists. How was this idea born?

Touring with Barns on his Supernatural tour back in the fall of 2023 and that simply came about because a lot of luck and my beautiful manager that helps me out get that spot. You know, we set aside an email and and we got ourselves on that tour, and that was surreal. That first one was long tour as well. That first tour with Barnes was like six weeks. And it was amazing as well. Kept that relationship going into the struts in Barnes tour, their co-headlining one that happened in Europe and the UK.

Another difficult question. If you have to choose between Barns and The Struts who wuould you choose?

I was gonna say does that include like performing live the both of them, you know. They try to top each other every night because of how amazing they are. I’m gonna have to say Barns because he’s been parading my merch lately. I’ve noticed he’s been wearing my merch and I think that’s very kind of fantastic. Sorry for The Struts, I love you guys!

Oh yes, that’s fantastic! You’ve also played with them in Italy, in Milan, a few months ago. How was the response from the italian audience?

Man, it was beautiful. I think that was the final show of the tour and what a way to end the tour and send me off. I walked out and started with my song When I’m Down. And I thought it was the craziest thing. I mean, you were there, so you probably remember this. You remember that they started clapping to keep tempo on When I’m Down and that is a song that is just me and my guitar. I remember I stopped playing guitar and just like sang it with you guys and it was it was one of the most beautiful experiences ever and you know every show where I get down in the barrier and someone holds my hand when I stand up is always there’s always a victory. Milan went crazy to say the least and I loved hanging out with you guys and meeting everyone after.

Is there another artist you would like to collaborate or go on tour with?

Lenny Kravitz would probably be my dream collaboration. A lot of the stuff I’m making right now, there’s some that’s inspired by the early Lenny Kravitz style rock.

Let’s talk about your creative process. How do write your songs?

It can vary, you know. I’ve had times where lyrics come first but I think the best way to do it is, you know me sitting with my acoustic guitar, getting a really strong riff melody chorus and just kind of organizing it from section by section and then you know thinking about what do I want to write about? What do I want the listener to feel? What do I want to? Put pen to paper with and that’s kind of when the lyrics come and then after that I’ll usually take it to like demo and you know throw it in my computer and kind of you know plug in an electric guitar get it a little bit more lively and from there I take it to the studio and see what the what soul this song truly has.

Are your lyrics inspired by personal experiences?

Defintely! When I’m Down was my last single I put out and that one was extremely personal. It was about, you know, a relationship that went south. And then on this record, you know, I’ve written about some just hypothetical things that have nothing to do with me. But I think it’s fun to, you know, create characters and create kind of a universe that you live in. And then, too, there’s no better thing than to take your art as a reflection of your life.

Which are your projects for the future? Are you working on new music?

I’ve been in the studio, actually, this is my second week in the studio, we’re mixing, today’s, funny enough, today is our last day mixing this new EP that is going to be coming out this year.

Will be there also a new tour?

I can neither confirm or deny that I will be sure in, but never say never.

New music coming very soon. I can neither confirm nor deny that I will be touring very soon. Man, what do I want to leave to them? New music sooner as you can imagine! See you on tour, you’re amazing!
