In occasione dell’uscita del suo nuovo album “The Whale” noi di Rockoon abbiamo l’occasione di scambiare quattro chiacchiere con Chantal Acda che ci ha raccontato qualcosa in più a riguardo. In particolare nel corso dell’intervista ci ha spiegato come, trattandosi di un album collaborativo, sia cambiato completamente il processo di scrittura e composizione dei brani. Inoltre ci ha rivelato il motivo dietro il suo titolo.

Ciao Chantal, benvenuta su Rockoon. Come stai?

Ciao! Sto abbastanza bene. Sono appena uscita da un ingorgo stradale enorme, ma sono riuscita a divertirmi ascoltando i vecchi successi degli anni ’90. Molti di Phil Collins.

Domani pubblicherai il tuo nuovo album “The Whale”, ti andrebbe di parlarcene un po’?

Per me pubblicare questo album è molto diverso rispetto ai precedenti. In realtà sono soprattutto orgogliosa della band. E grata. Suoniamo insieme con questa formazione da oltre 10 anni ormai, e sul palco ci divertiamo sempre tantissimo, trovando anche profondità e fiducia reciproca. È una grande gioia poter ora immortalare tutto questo in un album. Inoltre, offre un quadro più completo di me come persona. Mentre nei dischi precedenti emergeva il mio lato più malinconico e morbido, questa volta è presente anche il mio lato più grezzo. E questo mi fa davvero piacere.

Si tratta di un album collaborativo. Pensi che questo abbia modificato il tuo modo di scrivere e comporre? Se si, come?

Ha sicuramente cambiato il processo di scrittura. Abbiamo scritto questo album insieme, partendo da zero. Ognuno ha portato idee per le canzoni che abbiamo poi sviluppato insieme come gruppo. Abbiamo tutti caratteri piuttosto forti, quindi ho sempre trovato un po’ scoraggiante lavorare in questo modo, ma alla fine è andata benissimo. L’intensità è stata incanalata in modo davvero positivo. Chiedevo anche alla band di suggerirmi argomenti su cui scrivere i testi. Quindi sono ovunque.

Prima di intraprendere la carriera solista hai fatto parte di un duo con diverse formazioni, per te è stato un po’ come un ritorno alle origini questo album dato che ti sei trovata a lavorare con altre persone?

Non ci avevo pensato in questi termini. Domanda interessante! Beh, forse Sleepingdog quando ho iniziato a lavorare più intensamente con Adam Wiltzie. Ma comunque… la maggior parte di queste canzoni sono nate nel mio seminterrato. Lui è arrivato dopo (alcune erano un mix). Quindi scrivere e registrare con 5 persone insieme è un po’ più intenso.

Come mai il titolo “The Whale”? Che rappresenta per te questo animale?

Alcune storie si intrecciano in quel titolo e in quella canzone. Il mio amore, Eric Thielemans, che è anche il mio batterista, stava facendo una ricerca e si interessava alle balene che comunicano attraverso dei clic. È un argomento molto interessante e intrigante. Inoltre, trascorro molto tempo in Islanda e ho avuto la fortuna di trovarmi per caso da sola sul bordo di un fiordo, dove cinque balene mi si sono avvicinate. Erano molto vicine. Assolutamente magico. Per me le balene incarnano forza, dolcezza, intelligenza e amore. Sono bellissime. Ho avuto questa visione di me stessa che nuotavo, sentendomi a mio agio, con i suoni del mondo che diventavano più morbidi grazie all’acqua. Poi una balena ha nuotato verso di me e ci siamo guardate negli occhi.

Il 22 agosto hai pubblicato il singolo “Hit The Verge”, di che parla la canzone?

Parla di guidare una macchina e ascoltare tutte le notizie alla radio. Piove e sembra che non ci sia speranza per noi, come umanità. Ma la macchina è calda. E la voce della radio è morbida. In un modo strano ho trovato gratitudine in quel luogo.

Come hai scelto i singoli?

Volevo scegliere singoli che già dicessero qualcosa sull’atmosfera dell’album. Il suo volume e la sua morbidezza.

A breve arriverai anche in Italia per due concerti. Cosa dobbiamo aspettarci?

Musica. E spero anche un po’ di autenticità. Ma saremo noi e il pubblico a creare insieme il concerto. Abbiamo bisogno di quell’energia. E secondo la mia esperienza, quell’energia è spesso presente in Italia. È diventato uno dei miei posti preferiti in cui suonare!

Ultima domanda. Ti andrebbe di lasciare un messaggio ai nostri lettori per convincerli ad ascoltare la tua musica?

Non ho intenzione di convincervi. Ma mi piacerebbe invitarvi per farvi provare la nostra gratitudine e celebrare la musica. La musica è tutto.

Hello Chantal, welcome to Rockoon. How are you?

Hello there! I am doing sort of well. Just got out of a huge traffic jam but I managed to enjoy myself listening to old 90’s hits. A lot of Phill Collins.

Tomorrow your new album “The Whale” will be out. Would you like to tell us something more about it?

It feels very different for me to release this album compared to the previous ones. I’m actually mostly proud of the band. And grateful. We’ve been playing together in this line-up for over 10 years now, and on stage we always have so much fun while also finding depth and trust in one another. It’s such a joy to now have that captured on an album. It also gives a more complete picture of me as a person. Whereas on previous records my more melancholic and softer side came through, this time my rawer edge is also present. And that really feels good.

This is a collaborative album. Do you think that modified your way of writing and composing? If yes, how?

It definitely changed the writing process. We really wrote this album together from the ground up. Everyone brought in song ideas that we developed further as a group. We’re all pretty strong characters, so I always found it a bit daunting to work this way, but it turned out so well. The intensity was really channeled in a positive way. I would also ask the band for subjects to write lyrics. So they are everywhere.

Before starting your solo career you were part of a duo with different lineups. Has this album been like a return to the origins for you cause you worked with other musicians?

I didn’t think about it that way.Interesting question!  Well maybe Sleepingdog when I started working more intensely with Adam Wiltzie. But still…most of these songs were born in my basement. With him arriving later (some were a mix). So writing and recording with 5 people together is a bit more intense.

What’s the reason behind the title “The Whale”? What does this animal represent to you?

Some stories come together in that title and song. My love, Eric Thielemans, who is also my drummer, was doing a research and wa stalking about whales communicating through a click communication. So interesting and intruiging. Besides that I spend a lot of time in Iceland and I had the chance of accidently sitting on my own at the edge of a fjord and 5 whales came up to me. Very close. Total Magic. To me a whale captures strength, softness, intelligence and love. Beautiful. I saw this vision of me swimming, feeling at ease, with the sound of the world getting softer because of the water. And than a Whale swam to me and we just looked eachother in the eye.

On the 22nd of august you published the single “Hit The Verge”. What is it about?

About driving in the car and hearing all the news on the radio. It’s raining and it feels as if there is no hope for us, as humanity. But the car feels warm. And the voice of the radio sounds soft. In a weird way I found gratitute in that place.

How did you choose the singles?

I wanted to choose singles that would already tell something about the vibe of the album. It’s loudness and softness.

You’ll be in Italy for two concerts soon. What should we expect from them?

Music. And I hope some realness. But the audience and us will make the concert together. We need that energy. And in my experience that energy is so often there in Italy. It became one of my most favourite places to play!

Last question. Would you like to leave a message to our readers to convince them to listen to your music?

I am not going to convince you. But I would love to invite you. To feel our gratitute and celebrate music. Music is everything.
